don Miguel Ruiz

Don Miguel Ruiz, born in 1952, grew up in a Mexican village in a family of healers: his mother was a curandera, a traditional healer, and his grandfather a nagual, a keeper of Toltec wisdom. But the young Miguel chose science over his ancestors’ path, trained as a doctor, and became a surgeon. How he came to write this book. A car accident changed everything: he once fell asleep at the wheel, the car hit a wall, and Ruiz had a near-death experience, after which his old life lost its meaning. He returned to what he had once left behind, his family’s ancient knowledge, began learning from his mother, and devoted himself to the Toltec tradition. Why four agreements? Ruiz wanted to free ancient wisdom from complicated rituals and communicate it so that anyone could use it in everyday life. He condensed an entire teaching about mental freedom into four simple rules, and The Four Agreements (1997) became one of the leading personal-development bestsellers for years.
