Mikhail Bulgakov

Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov (1891–1940) was a Russian writer and playwright, trained as a physician. He published little in his lifetime and was harshly attacked by the Soviet authorities; he wrote The Master and Margarita “for the drawer” from 1928 almost until his death, knowing the novel would likely never be published. It first appeared (in abridged form) only in 1966–67, a quarter century after the author's death, and immediately became one of the essential books of the 20th century.
